How to Keep Kids Happy During a Photoshoot

Children bring magic to every photoshoot — but keeping them happy, relaxed, and engaged can make the experience even more enjoyable for everyone. As a family photographer in Dubai, I’ve photographed kids of all ages and personalities, from energetic toddlers to shy teenagers. Over time, I’ve learned a few simple tricks that help create natural smiles, genuine moments, and stress-free sessions.

1. Keep the Mood Light and Playful

Kids respond best when they feel like they're having fun, not following strict instructions.
Instead of posing them too much, I gently guide them with playful prompts:
  • “Run to mom and give her a hug.”

  • “Look at dad and make a funny face.”

  • “Show me how high you can jump!”

This helps me capture authentic, joyful expressions — the ones parents love most.

2. Bring Their Favorite Snacks and Comfort Items

Small, mess-free snacks work wonders during a session.
Good options include:

  • gummies

  • crackers

  • fruit bites

Avoid chocolate or anything that melts.

Comfort items like a small toy, blanket, or stuffed animal also help kids feel safe and happy, especially younger ones.

3. Keep Sessions Short and Child-Friendly

Most kids have a limited attention span, especially toddlers.
That’s why I structure family photoshoots in short segments, giving kids time to:

  • move

  • explore

  • reset

A 30–60 minute session is usually perfect for children. This keeps their energy positive and prevents them from feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

4. Let Kids Be Themselves

Some of the best photos happen when children are allowed to:

  • run

  • play

  • laugh

  • explore the location

Instead of forcing a smile, I let them interact naturally with their surroundings.
This creates beautiful and candid photos that feel real, timeless, and full of personality.

5. Choose a Comfortable Time of Day

For kids, timing is everything.

Avoid scheduling sessions:

  • during nap time

  • right after waking up

  • too late in the evening

The best time is usually early morning or sunset, when lighting is soft and kids are relaxed.

6. Let Me Build Trust With Your Child

Kids need a minute to warm up.
I always start the session by:

  • talking to them

  • asking simple questions

  • showing them the camera

  • letting them explore the space

Once kids feel comfortable with me, their smiles become completely natural — no forcing needed.

7. Keep Expectations Realistic (and Positive!)

Every child is different.
Some are energetic, some shy, some take time to warm up — and that’s okay.

My goal is always to capture your child’s true personality, not a perfect fake smile.
Positive energy from parents helps tremendously. When you stay calm and cheerful, kids do too.

8. Make It a Family Experience

Kids usually relax when they see their parents enjoying the moment.

Some ideas that work wonderfully:

  • walking together

  • hugs

  • lifting the child into the air

  • playing games

  • whispering secrets

These interactions create beautiful, emotional images and keep the child engaged.

Keeping kids happy during a photoshoot is all about creating a fun, relaxed environment where they feel comfortable being themselves. With the right approach, patience, and playful energy, your family session will be full of genuine smiles and meaningful moments.
